چکیده

Light and transm~ssion electron lnicroscopy techniques were used to study different stages of a thraustochytrid, a protist found on the bivalve molluscan Ruditapes decussatus. Vegetative cells developed on the gill epithelium at the base of the cilia. The cells of the protist divide by binary fission giving rise to zoosporangia, each containing 4 uninucleate biflagellated zoospores with a bilateral array of tubular mastigonemes on one of the flagella. Each zoospore develops within a thin nonlamlnated wall that is surrounded by a thicker, multilayered zoosporangial wall. Zoospores were ellipsoidal to spherical, 6.1 * 0.6 pm In diameter. Thraustochytrids have been lncluded in the Kngdom Protoctista and placed in a separate phylum Labyrinthulomycota (= Labyrinthomorpha). Based on the ultrastructural morphology of different developmental stages and absence of sagenogens and ectoplasmic nets, the present microorganism should be included in thraustochytrids. A comparison of ultrastructural observation of the different species in this group provides insufficient data for identifying the specles from R. decussatus.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the grooved carpet shell, Ruditapes decussatus (Bivalvia, Veneridae)

Despite the large number of animal complete mitochondrial genomes currently available in public databases, knowledge about mitochondrial genomics in invertebrates is uneven. This paper reports, for the first time, the complete mitochondrial genome of the grooved carpet shell, Ruditapes decussatus, also known as the European clam. Ruditapes decussatus is morphologically and ecologically similar ...

Hemocytes of the carpet shell clam ( Ruditapes decussatus) and the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum): Current knowledge and future prospects

Hemocytes are the immune effectors in clams, directing cellular but also humoral defences. In the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) and the carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus), two phenotypically similar venerid species, fishery and aquaculture importance motivated scientific studies to improve knowledge about the participation of hemocytes in immune response. Currently, gaps still per...

Dossier Metallothioneins ■ Metallothioneins in the clam Ruditapes decussatus : an overview

The clam R. decussatus is a suspension-feeding bivalve mollusc widely distributed in European and Mediterranean coastal waters. Due to its economic importance it is extensively cultured in many countries, and particularly in Portugal where its production represents > 80 % of total shellfish production. The selection of the clam R. decussatus as a bioindicator was a consequence of its economic i...

Assessing the geographic scale of genetic population management with microsatellites and introns in the clam Ruditapes decussatus

The clam Ruditapes decussatus is commercially important in southwestern Europe, suffering from population decline and hybridization with exotic Manila clam (R. philippinarum). Previous studies with intronic markers showed a genetic subdivision of the species in three races (Atlantic, West Mediterranean, and Adriatic-Aegean). However, detailed population genetic studies to help management of the...

Gene expression analysis of clams Ruditapes philippinarum and Ruditapes decussatus following bacterial infection yields molecular insights into pathogen resistance and immunity.

The carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus) and Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), which are cultured bivalve species with important commercial value, are affected by diseases that result in large economic losses. Because the molecular mechanism of the immune response of bivalves, especially clams, is scarce and fragmentary, we have examined all Expressed Sequence Tags (EST) resources avai...
